Ahhh, I hear you, you're wondering "what is naturopathy?" Maybe you're thinking it's some kind of witchcraft that only crazy people participate in, perhaps you think it's entirely separate from contemporary medicine, and you have to pick one or the other, and we are all anti-drugs or anti-vaccines!
Well lucky for you, you've come to the right place, and I am going to set the record straight and explain everything you need to know and why it is so fantastic!
Firstly I want to start by saying that Naturopathy is complementary medicine, this means that we work alongside conventional medicine to create harmony and get the best outcome possible. I for one am definitely do not believe in anti-vaccines, they are essential and have eradicated many diseases and illness that has made the world a safer and healthier place. Now in regards to pharmaceutical medicine, I am not against that either, and I understand the need for medication in certain situations. However, constant reliance on pharmaceuticals is dangerous and has implications.
I want to stress that Naturopathic Medicine is more about prevention so that you don't have to resort to taking pharmaceutical drugs for chronic diseases. Naturopaths can also help to support your body with pharmaceutical medicine you are taking. You can also opt, with medical advice (please, please, PLEASE don't take advise from untrained people or the internet about your health, it is so dangerous) to manage ailments and your health with herbal remedies instead of pharmaceuticals.
Okay, now I can finally get to the point. What is Naturopathy? Naturopathy is an alternative or complementary medicine that focuses on holistic healing, this means that your mind, physical being, environment and community are all interconnecting to your well being. Holistic healing is about taking a step back and looking at the whole picture and not just the one part of you that is suffering. This view on health helps to determine the root cause of illness and tackle it head on, instead of suppressing the symptoms just so that they can come back again when your immune system is low, or you are under stress. Naturopathy works by supporting the body to use its own healing mechanisms to get you back to health. By relying on the body to heal itself, you eliminate the bigger need for pharmaceuticals and actively work towards prevention so you can maintain health. Realistically if your body is healthy and fit, it can fight illnesses and diseases, it is when your body is compromised that these problems occur because it doesn't have the strength to fight. Intervention is sometimes needed to support your "vital force" (this is your healing mechanism) so that it can get back into working order. Intervention is based on the least harmful methods possible, which means we look at the most straightforward, easiest and least dangerous ways to get your health back on track. These methods can be addressing lifestyle factors or offering specific supplementation to support your body. There's a hierarchy of healing and lots of other factors that influence Naturopaths choices and help in aiding you back to health.
Okay, that is it, for now, I hope this answered some of your questions and didn't come across to confusing. If you have any questions, please ask them, and I will be happy to try and answer them. Just remember I am studying so I am still learning everything myself and I am by no means an expert. Yet!
